Mid West Fortune 500 Paper Company

Problem:

A mid western paper company purchased a new high speed winder and was faced with a problem of finding the space to accommodate the new winder and the trim removal system to handle the waste trim produced by the winder. They initially looked at modifying one of the existing edge trim systems to service this new winder but physically, it would not fit & it posed a major downtime problem to modify the existing system.

Solution/Recommendations:

Compass Systems analyzed the application, and we prepared a proposal that offered a unique idea that allowed them to install the machine in a limited space, while at the same time, keeping the production running on the existing winder. Additionally, they were concerned with the design of the system and proving that it would handle the trim produced at the very high design speed of 10,500 feet per minute. The proposal utilized one of our Compass WetVac Edge Trim System with a dedicated Trim Pulper. It offered them a very energy efficient system, compact enough to fit the limited space available. Last, with the proposed design, we were able to pre-pipe the complete system and reduce the installation time & cost.

Outcome:

We started the project in November of 2004 and the equipment was built and shipped by mid-March of 2005. The assembly & installation took a little over 2 weeks for the system and about 2 months for the new Winder. We were asked to complete the electrical & mechanical check-out & commissioning in early May, 2005. We ended up being on-site for just a few days as the performance met the design criteria immediately. There were some problems with the winder that limited the operational speed of the Winder until some modifications were made, but after these issues were fixed the system was run at the maximum design conditions. Overall, the customer told us they were very happy with our performance and that it met all of their expectations and they did save considerable dollars on the installation of the system, by allowing us to provide a turnkey package with the process piping & controls and by allowing us to set-up the system at our facility, prior to shipment for preliminary check-out.
